about

I was walking down the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder one evening with a guy I was dating. We had just gotten snacks and drinks from the 24 hour market on West Pearl called Lolita’s. Though I felt we were close, there was always a sense that our relationship would not last very long. More on that later.

We were chatting, strolling, enjoying the summer night. It was 1 am, but there were still people scattered about, playing music or talking outside of bars. He looked over at me and he said “We are just two ships passing in the night.”

The next day I was out on my porch thinking about that phrase. I wrote a poem that became the lyrics of this song, marking my strange romance that was probably not going to last but was definitely impactful. And doesn’t that mean that it meant something?

When I took it to the band to work up, they were really excited to make it into a driving bluegrass song. We decided it might be fun and different to have the instruments pass a solo back and forth at the end. Credit to Chris Herbst for thinking of the hard stop. He knew that would make an audience excited.

lyrics

You woke up in a parking lot
On a Sunday afternoon
You knew it was a pity, babe
The money came and went too soon
You spent it like a dead man
And like it rains in Tennessee
Hard and fast and all at once
On the night you first saw me

Passing in the night
With two welcoming lights,
Stay until the dawn

I drank a whole bottle of wine
You polished off the gin
I was sick to my stomach, babe
I wasn’t ready to let you in
Now the fog has lifted
Now the summer sun did rise
I see something plain and honest
In your eyes

Passing in the night
With two welcoming lights,
Stay until the dawn

There’s not a single minute
Where you don’t hear an engine spark
I can find some peace within it
Lyin’ here with you in the dark

Passing in the night
With two welcoming lights,
Stay until the dawn
We’ll go where the sun rays reach
Far beyond this beach
And the wind blows strong
