about
This was the last song I wrote for the album, and my intention was to make it the last song. Up until the final hours of mastering, this song was track. Credit to our engineer Aaron Youngberg for blowing my mind with his take on what the song order should be, which ultimately ended up being the song order.
In early February 2019, I showed up at my co writer, RP Oates, house with a vague idea for a song. I was caffeinated up and feeling excited about a new relationship I was in. I loved the idea of lighthouses, a great way to end an album about a journey on the rocky seas.
We sat down and I said I wanted to write a song in 6/8 (all of our songs on the album were in 4/4), I wanted to subject to be a lighthouse, and I wanted the song to be in an uplifting, major key. RP picked up the guitar and started to mess around with chords while I hummed melodies and scribbled words. Writing the lyrics was painful- usually when RP and I write I have at least some of the words already written. These were coming out fresh right in front of him, and it was hard to be apart of it. We got to the chorus, and I flipped lighthouse to House of Light, and everything clicked.
After we finished the song, it haunted me for days and nights. I would fall asleep with it looping in my head. It was definitely annoying, but it also made me think that it would be the album’s single because the melody is so sticky. I asked several trusted members of the team to pick a single, and there were some varied opinions but “House of Light” was on every short list.
lyrics
Fate tugged
The hem of my dress and pulled the rug
From under the rest
When I saw you shinin’
Out from
A hell of a year
Where I’d run out of passages clear
And time’s left unwindin’
Now I know the way
Light it up you say
Pass it over and
Let’s feel good
In your house of light
Standing true all night
Mama raised you right
I think I could
Love you all my life
That morning
The bloom of a new year was dawning
The hospital room was the right place to say
Hey, i know we’re t flesh and we’re bone
But heart can make it home
And I would move in today
Now I know the way
Light it up you say
Pass it over and
Let’s feel good
In your house of light
Standing true all night
Mama raised you right
I think I could
Love you all my life
Half way and half hearted
Is all I used to know
The stars that I’ve charted
have led me to your glow
That easily parted
the darkness of being alone
Pass it over and
Let’s feel good
In your house of light
Standing true all night
Mama raised you right
I think I could
Love you all my life
Love you all my life
Love you all my life
