about

I wrote this in my Boulder living room with a friend of mine named John Lewth. We had always talked about collaborating on music but it never happened until this day. I had written the song earlier in the summer, but hadn’t done much with it. John and I scheduled a songwriting session and I played it for him. He’s inspired by the musical hooks of pop music, and came up with a catchy riff that follows the chorus. He sat there and encouraged me while I eeked out the story of the second verse.

Before I brought it to the band, I had an idea to have an extended jam at the end of it. I was listening to a song called “Living Over” by Greensky Bluegrass a lot and I was so entranced by the jam at the end of it, a mystical, formless swell between mandolin and dobro. When we started to arrange it, we decided that a 4 chord to a 5 chord would be a great space to experiment with some open-endedness.

Aaron slapped a tape delay on Dylan’s mandolin to give it an echo effect during the jam. When we had decided to record an album, around September 2018, I knew I wanted to make string band music with permission to bend the rules. We recorded Holler Out at Swingfingers Studio in Fort Collins, and I loved the sounds that came out of Aaron Youngberg’s studio. I called him up and told him my idea, how I wanted to see if he was down to do weird shit that isn’t on traditional bluegrass album. He told me to listen to his band, FY5’s, latest record. They worked with a lot of experimentation on that album (listen to them!!!). I called him back and told him he was the guy for the job, and we booked our April 2019 dates.

We recorded this album 10 days after coming back from our t 3 week debut tour of the UK. That tour made us a real unit, and I love the tightness of the band that we captured on these songs. We recorded all full band tracks together, isolated in separate booths. Then we sang and redid some solos as overdubs. We spent 8 days and 7 nights in Horsetooth Reservoir outside of Fort Collins, Colorado.

lyrics

I want the things that are bad for me
Wine, and weed and you
Take away any memory
Nothin’ left to prove
Wine and weed and you

I’ll spend all my money, I guess
On gas in the tank, and a black lace dress
So I can get my daily dose of
Someone holding me closer

We drove along Lake Ponchartrain
When everything was new
Hotel room to escape the rain
Nothin left to do
Wine and Weed and You

I’ll spend all my money, I guess
On gas in the tank, and a black lace dress
So I can get my daily dose of
Someone holding me closer

I’ll spend all my money, I guess
On gas in the tank, and a black lace dress
So I can get my daily dose of
Someone holding me closer

I’ll be fine with a bottle of wine
someone holdin’ me closer
I feel good when I’m not where I should be
Holdin’ you closer
I’ll feel better I’ll forget he ever was
Holdin’ me closer
Holdin’ me closer
