about
This song started it all in February 2018. I was about to go through with my big break up that would change my life. I had another man knocking down my door, I had a love that had already died within me. It was a strange place to be. I felt broken, yet open at the same time. I felt defeated that I couldn’t make my relationship work, but not ready to process what that might feel like. I wanted someone to just come on in and take their place.
I got a text with a Hank Williams song in it. I listened to it, so simple and sad. It tugged at all the right strings, and I immediately picked up the guitar and wrote my own simple, sad country song. The words tumbled out, and the song remains almost identical to what came out of me in that moment.
We had a lot of fun arranging this song. Everyone in the band is fans of old country, and we hadn’t really done a song like this before. Credit to Chris Herbst for writing the swingy intro. He studied all of the old pedal steel licks from Hank Williams era, and really knew what to do with this song. Dylan shines on the background vocals. Originally it was a three part harmony but we loved the way Dylan’s voice blended all on its own.
lyrics
Walk right through the door of my heart
It’s easy, Ieft it unlocked
It’s at the end of my rope
It’s a tiny thing, I know
Walk right through the door of my heart
Help yourself to anything here
Go ahead and open up a beer
Make yourself at home
With everything I own
Help yourself to anything here
I’ve been ripped up in shame
And I lost this age old game
I cannot fight it, I’m feeling old
I had dreams, but they failed
I had ships but they sailed
Now everything must go
I’ve been ripped up in shame
And I lost this age old game
I cannot fight it, I’m feeling old
I had dreams, but they failed
I had ships but they sailed
Now everything must go
Take the narrow pathway to my bed
I can’t go back, you got inside my head
I had a man, but he’s gone
I gave my life for a song
Take the narrow pathway to my bed
And walk right through the door of my heart

Sweet album. Recommended to anyone who enjoys Gillian Welch-esque Americana with a personal turn. Thanks to Bandcamp for featuring this album! Solituned

The whole album is awesome. But I gravitated first toward "Portland". Then "Wildwood Flower" because I'm familiar the 10,000 Maniacs cover. Very different; AVK's is very contemplative. Jameson Calantoc
Utterly gorgeous songs that combine traditional folk and bluegrass with the Jewish Sabbath liturgy to moving effect. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 24, 2023
