about
RP and I extended out this song, and we were proud of all the imagery we created around my first little verse. But I felt the song needed something more to advance the story. I had a vague idea of sticking a fiddle tune in the middle of it and brought it to the guys.
In my living room in Boulder, we thought of some chords and I hummed out my version of a sea shanty. We worked out how to switch to ¾ time, to make it like a sailors drinking song. Beer mugs crashing together, a rocking boat- but melancholy instead of celebratory.
In studio, Ian layered arco parts on top of eachother to fill out the fiddle tune section. This song always takes me to a dark, distant shore in my mind, and I hope it takes audiences there too.
lyrics
There ain’t no charts to guide
Where strings and stars collide
I pull up anchor
trim the sails
I’m gettin’ started
Uncharted, farewell
Landed on your shore
Til I knew I needed more
Pull up anchor
trim the sail
Mend my heart and
Uncharted farewell
Every day a tide to turn
In the still before storm
Everyday a lesson learned
No port to keep me warm
Pull up anchor
trim the sails
I’m gettin’ started
Uncharted, farewell
A siren song to me
Is a maiden strong at sea
Pull up anchor
Face the gale
The wind keeps bawlin’ I’m callin’
Uncharted, farewell
Every day a tide to turn
In the still before storm
Everyday a lesson learned
No port to keep me warm
Pull up anchor
Face the gale
The wind keeps bawlin’ I’m callin’
Uncharted, farewell
Somewhere in the deep
Is a love like lock to key
Pull up anchor
trim the sail
Mend my heart and
Uncharted farewell
Dear the departed
Uncharted, Farewell

Sweet album. Recommended to anyone who enjoys Gillian Welch-esque Americana with a personal turn. Thanks to Bandcamp for featuring this album! Solituned

The whole album is awesome. But I gravitated first toward "Portland". Then "Wildwood Flower" because I'm familiar the 10,000 Maniacs cover. Very different; AVK's is very contemplative. Jameson Calantoc
Utterly gorgeous songs that combine traditional folk and bluegrass with the Jewish Sabbath liturgy to moving effect. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 24, 2023
