about
I wrote a version of this song in fall of 2018. It started with the verse melody. I wanted to write an old-time inspired song where the verse melody was so catchy that all the instruments would sound good playing it. I got a halfway chorus done and sent it to RP.
He kept the end part of the chorus “My body, my heart and my home” and added the words about people carrying the narrator around once they’re dead. (RP wrote “Lie Just Fine” from Holler Out, our first record. He’s into writing joyous songs about death). He said to speed it up so it was less melancholy, more celebratory. You’re independent! It’s your wild and precious life! I started to think about the song that way. But I could not write a second verse! RP sent me the second verse lyrics and it clicked.
Everyone in the band loves old time, so we had a lot of fun writing the instrumental parts in this song. Old-time melodies loop back on themselves, which is why parts of this song often loose beats. This was a perfect for for Natalie Padilla, and her fiddle added a bird-like trill that made the triumphant anthem come alive.
lyrics
I have sailed the seven seas
I’ve severed all my ties
I ain’t nobody’s darlin’
Says the blue within my eyes
I was born a western storm
On waves I was raised
Collected shells for wishing wells
Down where my pennys lay
Mother carry me
I give my words to you
Brother won’t you bury me
And tell my story true
The greatest one I’ve ever known
Is the one of my body, my heart and my home
I’m carvin’ all the mountains tall
With verses and rhyme
I’ve sung about my secrets
To every single pine
Dawn to dusk, I said I must
Keep the tales as high
As treason in the roses
And the rebels in the rye
Mother carry me
I give my words to you
Brother won’t you bury me
And tell my story true
The greatest one I’ve ever known
Is the one of my body, my heart and my home
When my time is over
The earth will come to drain
The grace within my hillside
And the starlight in my veins
I’ve sailed the seven seas
I’ve severed all my ties
I ain’t nobody’s darlin
Says the blue within my eyes
Mother carry me
I give my words to you
Brother won’t you bury me
And tell my story true
The greatest one I’ve ever known
Is the one of my body, my heart and my home

Sweet album. Recommended to anyone who enjoys Gillian Welch-esque Americana with a personal turn. Thanks to Bandcamp for featuring this album! Solituned

The whole album is awesome. But I gravitated first toward "Portland". Then "Wildwood Flower" because I'm familiar the 10,000 Maniacs cover. Very different; AVK's is very contemplative. Jameson Calantoc
Utterly gorgeous songs that combine traditional folk and bluegrass with the Jewish Sabbath liturgy to moving effect. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 24, 2023
