about
This was another song written on my porch in Boulder, middle of summer 2018. I had just gotten back from tour, and I had a date with my guy that didn’t end well. I was sitting alone in the summer evening, staring at a candle. I saw a dead bug floating in the wax and thought That’s me. I’m the bug and he’s the candle. Why can’t I stop?
I knew it wasn’t going to last because he was struggling with himself, and there was no way I was going to get him out of what he was going through. But it frustrated me. I wanted to make it all better, to fix him! Why couldn’t my love be enough to do that?
We were bored before a gig in Laramie, WY on the 4th of July. I showed the guys the song and we arranged it right there, on the train tracks. This was another one they were excited to drive, as we have no fast bluegrass songs in G. This became it, my ode to all of those that just don’t know when to stop.
lyrics
Like a bug and a light
I ran into you last night and I burned up
Even though I know the game
I’m still flyin’ into that flame
When will I have had enough
And the day is seizing you
Head in hands, feelin blue
You gotta get it together
Why can’t I kiss it and make it better?
18 days on the road
Just like 18 wheels I followed home
To you
But your caught up in a haze
And another slow parade of days
I cannot get through
And the night is creepin in
And you wanna be alone again
You gotta get it together
Why can’t I kiss it and make it better
You can’t run, you can’t hide
From the person that you are inside
It will follow you to every town
But I won’t be around
It’ll tear us apart
Having such a heavy heart
You gotta get it together
Why can’t I kiss it and make it better
It’ll tear us apart
Having such a heavy heart
You gotta get it together
Why can’t I kiss it and make it better

Sweet album. Recommended to anyone who enjoys Gillian Welch-esque Americana with a personal turn. Thanks to Bandcamp for featuring this album! Solituned
The whole album is awesome. But I gravitated first toward "Portland". Then "Wildwood Flower" because I'm familiar the 10,000 Maniacs cover. Very different; AVK's is very contemplative. Jameson Calantoc
Utterly gorgeous songs that combine traditional folk and bluegrass with the Jewish Sabbath liturgy to moving effect. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 24, 2023
