about
I was not sure if this song would make it on the album. I wrote the chorus late one night, when I was avoiding sleep with terrible reality TV. I’ve always had vivid dreams, and been interested in what my dreams have to say. I’ve also been a sleep talker and walker for my whole life. The things I say are apparently very strange and often I am panicked or worried. I sometimes wonder if I’m expressing hurt or anguish from centuries before me.
I showed the song to the guys, not sure what they would think. But they encouraged me and we arranged the song. Originally we had a “Because” style intro with the guitar picking a minor arpeggio before launching into the dobro intro, but it was nixed in the studio.
This was definitely one of the songs that got refined in studio, including the harmonies. Dylan, Ian and I spent a while refining them while Aaron coached us.
I’m so glad this song made it on the album, so I can finally tell audiences about the strange things the guys hear me say in my sleep while we are on tour.
lyrics
Crawlin’ out of window in my sleep
Confessin’ all the deepest darkest secrets one can keep
I alone, can see up on the hill
The graveyard and the churchyard standin’ still
Fallin’ down a rabbit hole
It never ends I’m told
Always as strange as it’s ever been
Maybe I’ll make it til morning
Cryin’ for the lonely and forgotten
Centuries before me yet I’m mourning all the lost and all the low
Destined to be
The dead twisted branches of an old evergreen
Fallin’ down a rabbit hole
It never ends I’m told
Always as strange as it’s ever been
Maybe I’ll make it til morning
Then the sun comes to save me
And the children laugh in the yard
I’ll forget what it is that kept me awake
With such a troubled heart
Fallin’ down a rabbit hole
It never ends I’m told
Always as strange as it’s ever been
Maybe I’ll make it til morning
Fallin’ down a rabbit hole
It never ends I’m told
Always as strange as it’s ever been
Maybe I’ll make it til morning

Sweet album. Recommended to anyone who enjoys Gillian Welch-esque Americana with a personal turn. Thanks to Bandcamp for featuring this album! Solituned

The whole album is awesome. But I gravitated first toward "Portland". Then "Wildwood Flower" because I'm familiar the 10,000 Maniacs cover. Very different; AVK's is very contemplative. Jameson Calantoc
Utterly gorgeous songs that combine traditional folk and bluegrass with the Jewish Sabbath liturgy to moving effect. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 24, 2023
