about
This song took a week or two to write. I got the chorus first, nixed the original verses and rewrote and rewrote. At the time, I felt like I was spending hours trying fall out of love with my partners in past relationships- it felt like a job. I had really cut down on my drinking, so I didn’t have as much of a crutch to help. One of my ex’s was on a plane to Europe, the other was in a new relationship. I thought that they must be much happier without me.
This one was a hard nut to crack. We didn’t arrange it for a while, because it didn’t feel like a song that needed a lot from the instruments. Credit to Allen for the dark dobro sound that fills the song after the first chorus.
We decided to feature the instruments at the end, let them have their moment almost separate from the song. We don’t have traditional “break” times the way you would in traditional bluegrass on this record. We really wanted to arrange every part of it, with every song showing off its own set of influences. I think this song really shows off our 60’s folk vibe.
lyrics
Tryin’ not to love you is a part time gig
I try to laugh but I look back and there’s no one to kid
You said Jesus wanted to save me
But I just needed you to lay me down
Stop acting caught
You know you can do just what you want
You can ride out tonight
On a 10 hour flight
See the light of the day
Half a world away
There are planes, there are cars
And they’re here to take you far
From the worry and the pain
That I brought with the rain
The day I came to you
Tryin’ to forgive you is a nightly chore
And I can’t find my peace of mind at the liquor store
So in the catacombs I will find myself
Something good from the highest self
Movin on
Takin’ it with the jukebox song by song
You can ride out tonight
On a 10 hour flight
See the light of the day
Half a world away
There are planes, there are cars
And they’re here to take you far
From the worry and the pain
That I brought with the rain
The day I came to you
No tear-stained letter will do better
Than my silence
Go to hell, or wish you well
Won’t do me no good
Just another missed connection
Farewell, brother
No need to mention my name
And everything I brought with the rain
Tryin’ not to love you is a part time gig

Sweet album. Recommended to anyone who enjoys Gillian Welch-esque Americana with a personal turn. Thanks to Bandcamp for featuring this album! Solituned
The whole album is awesome. But I gravitated first toward "Portland". Then "Wildwood Flower" because I'm familiar the 10,000 Maniacs cover. Very different; AVK's is very contemplative. Jameson Calantoc
Utterly gorgeous songs that combine traditional folk and bluegrass with the Jewish Sabbath liturgy to moving effect. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 24, 2023
